Calenix vs Booksy: Which Booking Platform Is Better for Independent Professionals?

Independent professionals, from mobile stylists to freelance therapists, need booking that fits how they work alone. We compare Calenix and Booksy on solo pricing, travel services, new-client fees and calendar handling.

Booksy is a good fit for independent beauty and grooming professionals, especially mobile ones, because it supports travel services with your own radius and fees, includes a client marketplace listing, with optional paid Boost and includes card payments. Calenix is a better fit for independent professionals who sell sessions online or from an office, such as coaches, consultants, tutors and counsellors, and who want booking alongside a service page, digital card and email signature.

Booksy has one main plan that covers the owner, with extra fees per added team member. Calenix starts free and keeps its Individual plan priced for one person.

Independent work, two different models

Booksy is a booking and business app built for appointment-based services such as barbers, hair and nail professionals and massage therapists. It pairs the business app with a consumer marketplace where clients can discover and book you.

Calenix is a scheduling platform with professional presence tools: booking pages and event types, service and landing pages, digital business cards, LinkDock and email signatures. It does not run a consumer marketplace, so clients reach you through your own links.

Our earlier comparison looked at Booksy and Calenix for service teams and salons. This one is for people who work on their own.

Working on the move

Mobile professionals have a particular problem: travel time. Booksy addresses it directly. Its features page says you can "offer travel services - you decide your travel radius and your price (including travel fees)". For a hypothetical mobile lash artist covering Leeds and its suburbs, that keeps far-flung bookings in check and builds travel costs into the price.

Calenix approaches location through event types, where you can set the location, duration, buffers and booking limits for each kind of appointment. Buffers between bookings, available from the Individual plan, can leave time to travel, but Calenix does not list radius-based travel pricing. If you travel to clients most days, Booksy's travel services are the more specialised tool.

New clients: marketplace fees or your own channels

Booksy's Boost feature promotes you to new clients on its marketplace. Turning it on is free with no monthly fee, but each new client it brings you attracts a one-off fee of 30% of their first visit. The US page caps that fee at $100, and the UK page sets a minimum of £5. Booksy says it charges no commission when Boost is off.

Calenix has no marketplace and no new-client commission. Independent professionals using Calenix win clients through their own channels: a digital card shared at a community market, a LinkDock page in an Instagram bio, or a booking link in every email. Our guide to adding a booking link to a digital business card shows how to set that up.

Keeping one calendar in order

Independent professionals usually manage their own diary, so the link between booking software and personal calendar matters. Booksy's support centre describes importing an .ics file of existing events, up to 5,000 events, which become walk-in appointments in Booksy. It is a file upload of existing events; the article does not describe an ongoing calendar sync.

Calenix connects to your calendar on every plan, with two-way Google Calendar sync described on its integrations page and Outlook and Apple iCloud also listed, so personal commitments block out booking times automatically.

A simple test before you commit

Independent professionals rarely have time to switch tools twice, so run a short trial with real clients.

  • Book a test appointment as a client on your phone and time how long it takes.
  • Check that a personal commitment in your own calendar blocks the right slot.
  • Take a small payment and confirm when the money reaches your account.
  • Note where your last five new clients actually found you: a marketplace, Instagram, referrals or events.

If most of your new clients come through discovery apps, Booksy's marketplace may pay for itself. If they come from your own network, Calenix keeps that relationship on your own pages.

Calenix or Booksy: which should you choose?

When Booksy makes more sense

Booksy is the better pick for independent beauty, grooming and wellness professionals who travel to clients, want to be found on a consumer marketplace and take card payments in person. Travel radius and fees, in-person payment options and a single plan that covers the owner make it practical for one-person service businesses in its categories.

When Calenix makes more sense

Calenix is the better pick for independent professionals who sell expertise rather than treatments: coaches, consultants, tutors, counsellors and creatives. A free starting point, live calendar connection, Stripe payments from Individual and a service page, digital card and email signature in one account suit people who find clients through their own network. It does not currently list a marketplace, SMS reminders or travel pricing.
